Varios críticos la han aclamado como una obra maestra, elogiando la interpretación de Ryan Gosling, protagonista de Barbie, y reconociendo el mérito de los cineastas Phil Lord y Christopher Miller por haber creado una película de ciencia ficción perfecta.

Nadie se atreve a mencionar al coprotagonista de Gosling, un misterioso alienígena que conoce en su viaje por el cosmos. Sin embargo, los tráileres ya lo han desvelado, mientras que en el libro Proyecto Salvación se trataba como un giro sorpresa.
El pasado mes de noviembre, el autor de la novela Andy Weir justificó la decisión diciendo:
«En realidad, es más bien una decisión de marketing de Amazon MGM, pero la idea era que nadie fuera a entrar en el cine sin saber nada de Rocky. No se trata de una situación del tipo «Darth Vader es el padre de Luke»».
